Stop Holiday Weight Gain: 7 Tips for a Healthy Season

Holiday meals and parties stretch from mid-November through New Year’s Eve. During those six weeks or so, most people gain about three-quarters of a pound. That might not sound like much, but it doesn’t always come off easily afterward.

Since the average person only gains slightly over a pound per year, most of the annual weight gain occurs during the holidays and compounds over time.

At El Cajon Weight Clinic in El Cajon, California, James Joachim, MD, and our team help patients develop strategies to enjoy the season without starting January several pounds heavier.

1. Stop skipping meals to “save room” for dinner

Fasting all day before a big holiday meal backfires. You arrive at dinner ravenous, eat faster than your body can register fullness, and consume far more calories than if you’d eaten normally throughout the day. Your metabolism also slows when you skip meals, so those extra calories are stored as fat rather than burned.

A light breakfast with protein and a satisfying lunch keep your hunger manageable. You’ll still have an appetite for dinner, but you won’t feel compelled to pile your plate high and go back for seconds.

2. Build your plate in the right order

Start with vegetables before touching the bread basket or cheese platter. Fiber-rich foods fill you up with fewer calories and take longer to digest, which means you feel satisfied sooner and stay full longer.

Your stomach has limited space. Fill some of that space with roasted Brussels sprouts or green bean casserole before loading up on stuffing and mashed potatoes, and you’ll naturally eat less of the calorie-dense options.

3. Plan ahead for parties and gatherings

Walking into a holiday buffet without a plan leads to impulsive choices. Look at everything available before putting food on your plate. Decide which dishes you actually want rather than taking some of everything because it’s there.

Bringing a vegetable-based dish or lean protein option to potlucks gives you at least one nutritious choice. You can enjoy smaller portions of richer foods while still feeling satisfied.

4. Pay attention while you eat

Eating while standing at a party, watching television, or scrolling through your phone disconnects you from your body’s fullness signals. You consume more because you’re not registering how much you’ve eaten.

Sit down when you eat, chew slowly, and put your fork down between bites. These simple changes give your brain time to catch up with your stomach.

5. Watch your drink calories

Eggnog, hot chocolate, spiced cider, and cocktails add up quickly. A single cup of eggnog contains hundreds of calories, and most people don’t stop at one drink during holiday gatherings.

Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or unsweetened beverages. Choose wine or spirits mixed with club soda instead of sugary mixers.

6. Keep moving during the busy season

Exercise often falls off the priority list when schedules fill up with shopping, cooking, and social obligations. Too little physical activity combined with increased food intake creates the perfect conditions for weight gain.

A 20-30-minute walk after holiday meals helps your body process the food and prevents that uncomfortable, stuffed feeling. Getting movement early in the day ensures you won’t skip it if evening plans run late. Even 10 minutes of activity keeps your metabolism working, rather than letting it slow down during this sedentary season.

7. Put food away once the meal ends

Leaving dishes on the counter encourages mindless snacking hours after dinner. You pick at leftovers while cleaning up, grab another cookie every time you walk past the kitchen, and consume hundreds of extra calories without registering them as a meal or snack.

Pack up leftovers immediately after everyone finishes eating. Send extras home with guests if you can. Removing the visual reminder breaks the automatic hand-to-mouth pattern that occurs when food remains visible and accessible.
